Maximalist Decoden Mirror Commission
Project type
Hand-etched Mixed Media Mirror
Date
August 2025
Location
Madison, WI
This hand-etched stand alone mirror is a commission for Chloe Grimm, a local artist creating handmade clothing. It is one of my largest projects to date and I am incredibly happy with the way it turned out :-) Prior to starting the mirror, I designed a new logo for Chloe's business, which I then hand-etched onto the glass, as well as some barbed wire around the top arch of the mirror.
Some of my favorite details of the mirror include:
- The wind up music box that I cut out of an old porcelain doll and then decorated with eyeballs and adhered to the mirror. It does indeed play a creepy lil tune when wound up.
- This mirror has color changing blue tooth LED strip lights that connect both to an app on your phone, as well as a remote.
- I love the little strawberry coffee tin. My thought was that it gives an extra tiny customization option as you can put something lightweight in it. I found it in a booth at atomic antiques in Madison, which leads to another one of my favorite parts about this mirror--- the scavenging of tiny trinkets and charms, as well as getting to play with some of the materials and cool fabrics that Chloe provided.
- Lastly, I love the block letters at the top, as this mirror is for Chloe's business and will be brought to events and markets. I wanted to make sure that their name was very visible and prominent for when people are trying on clothes at their booth or taking a picture in the mirror.
