SPIRIT ROOT ART

About
Hello! My name is Cedar Worth, and I'm a multidisciplinary artist based in Madison, Wisconsin.

My art practice revolves around embracing the entirety of who I am and the way my brain works, as well as challenging perfectionism and the idea that I need to fit myself and my work into a specific box.

I am an Autistic ADHDer with CPTSD, and I feel like hypervigilance and a head full of 1,000 thoughts at once is my default mode. I am consistently redirecting myself as I create, in the same way I would redirect a younger version of myself; gently and without shame. Even as an adult, I continue to see fawning, people pleasing, and perfectionism show up in my daily life. I use my art as a tool to work through these challenges. My practice is a dance in a sense-- an ebb and flow of finding myself creating art that is palatable, digestible, or what I feel will be easily liked; and then offering myself reassurance, compassion, and redirection towards what feels exciting and authentic.

I feel that inside capitalism, creativity rots. I feel that much of my unconscious gravitation towards creating art that I think others want to see is a direct result of capitalism and my immense desire to be financially stable and someday have my own apartment or art studio where I can create without the fear of perception and needing to mask my autism.
I also feel that a lot of these tendencies come from societal expectations and gender biases.
I came out as non-binary in 2019, and until that point identified as a woman, and have felt from an incredibly young age the need to shrink myself down and not be "too much"-- but I'm so tired of keeping myself small. I think our world now more than ever needs less conformity and more of an emphasis on embracing our passions and skill sets.
Through my work I hope to inspire others to embrace their weird creative ideas, and to have compassion for their inner critic-- as that voice likely thinks it's serving a purpose, even if it's no longer needed. I would love to offer workshops someday and help others navigate these challenges in real time, yet for now I truly hope my work sparks joy or feels affirming in whatever way you need it.
Areas of Exploration
Mixed Media
Mixed media work is a sensory wonderland for me. Within the past year I've been taking different found objects and smushing them into a combination of glues, acrylics, silicone, and encaustics. This kind of work is soothing and exciting for me--- both the process of finding the materials to work with, and the act of creating the art. I'm greatly inspired by midwestern grotto art, nostalgia and ephemera, chaotic magic similar to Walter Wick's 'I SPY' works, and reconnecting with my childlike wonder.
Digital Illustration
I have loved to draw since I was a kid, and a game changer for me has been illustrating digitally using Procreate on my Ipad. My illustrations are greatly inspired by the interconnectedness of all life; nature and spirituality; nostalgia; my identity as a queer, trans, chronically ill & neurodivergent being; my desires for a better world; and my belief that art inspires and is a tool to help create the world we want.
Working with Found and Natural Materials
Much of my mixed media work and jewelry incorporate found and natural materials. Whether it's stones and bones collected in the woods, Sea glass from sitting on the beach and sifting through the sand with my hands, or Up-cycling and etching mirrors from thriftstores and marketplace-- I love bringing new life to old treasures. Working with found materials is what inspired me to start making jewelry with found bones in 2019. It also lead me to hand-pouring my own soy wax candles in up-cycled vessels from 2020-2023, and selling them in stores, at art markets, and online.
Hand-crafted Jewelry
The area I focus on the most for art markets and consignment is my hand-crafted jewelry, specifically earrings. I have been making bone jewelry for 5+ years, and the bones and teeth used in my art are from a variety of sustainable sources. For about 7 years, I have collected and cleaned bones I find on hikes and drives, including roadkill. I'm grateful for friends and customers who think of me when they find dead things :) and I also source bones from small businesses on Etsy. All of the earring hooks I use are hypoallergenic. I've recently switched over to using hypoallergenic nickel free stainless steel earring hooks as I find they're more durable and tarnish free than the 925 sterling silver hooks. I love the creativity and freedom that comes with making earrings, and have a very large collection of beads and charms that i guard like a treasure goblin in a dimly- lit mystical cavern.
Glass and Mirror Etching
I enjoy finding old glass and mirrors on facebook marketplace, at thrift and antique stores, and sometimes discarded glass/trash found on my walks through the woods. I use a cordless handheld dremel tool and love the flexibility of being able to work outside or move around how I want without worrying about a cord. Many of my etched works are freehanded-- otherwise I take advantage of leftover tattoo transfer paper from my tattooing days.
Literary Works
Another lifelong passion of mine is writing; my journals from throughout the years are my most prized possessions. I aspire to someday take my favorite bits and pieces from them, and combine them with my other poems, illustrations, and works to create a cohesive book.
I don't share as much of my writing as I'd like to, as it is the most tender and vulnerable pieces of myself; though the two pieces I have submitted to literary magazines were both accepted. You can find my work in WYRD Magazine's 8th Issue from fall of 2024, as well as HNDL Magazine's 11th Issue 'light'.
